Once you complete the Life Dreams and Legacies Quest your sims will begin to age automatically. Previously once the circle that appears around their face was full and red you needed to either age them to the next life stage or use LP to reverse them back to the beginning of the life stage they are currently at.

This will automatically age them up into the next life stage (unless they are already an elder).

Why do my sims age up?
Answer: Each time you're loading into live mode from another mode (CAS, Manage Worlds, Loading the game) a random amount is added to your Sim's age until the age and eventually die. The same goes for pets.
